The Ten Essentials
The Ten Essentials are a collection of first aid and survival items that the Boy Scouts of America recommends all scouts carry on every outdoor adventure.
1. Pocketknife
A versatile tool for preparing food, first aid, and emergency repairs. Remember your Totin' Chip!
2. First Aid Kit
Basic supplies to treat minor injuries like blisters, cuts, and scrapes. Should be kept in a waterproof container.
3. Extra Clothing
Always carry layers. Weather can change quickly, and staying dry and warm is critical for safety.
4. Rain Gear
A lightweight poncho or rain jacket to keep you dry. Hypothermia is a risk even in mild temperatures if you get wet.
5. Water Bottle
Stay hydrated! Carry a durable, reusable water bottle and know how to treat water if necessary.
6. Flashlight
A headlamp or flashlight (with extra batteries) for navigating safely after dark.
7. Trail Food
High-energy snacks like trail mix, granola bars, or dried fruit to keep your energy levels up.
8. Matches & Fire Starter
Waterproof matches and a fire starter (like dryer lint or paraffin) for emergency warmth and cooking.
9. Sun Protection
Sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, and a wide-brimmed hat to prevent burns and long-term skin damage.
10. Map & Compass
Essential for navigation. A GPS is great, but a map and compass never run out of batteries!
